I'm such a nerd. I think the dysfunctional duo needs a feminine influence. Besides Mrs. Hudson. Someone who can keep up with them. What about a Doctor Who-esque time agent that gets stuck in the past? (Hey, the writers for the BBC started it! Sherlock Holmes in the 21 century. Why not a time agent?)

Maybe I should just switch to drawing Doctor Who.
Its an older sketch, but I still like it. I still love drawing Snape. So much fun. Can't wait to see the conclusion of the movies!

New Space Jet Header

I decided I should update my Space Jet header to make it look better. Here it is bigger. (Click to make even bigger.)

The Rebel Flesh

This season of Doctor Who has been stellar. I didn't expect much from the current Rebel Flesh/Almost People 2-parter, but it is really very good, and so I drew up a li'l tribute. (Although it's only my 4th favourite out of the current 5 out so far. I might get to some others later. We'll see.)

Matt Smith a.k.a. The Doctor

OK, so I'm finally back from my month away in Europe. 10 pounds lighter in weight somehow, but a foot-high stack of mostly hardcover French comics heavier, overall. But to my great delight, upon my return, thanks to the wonderful Emma, a friend of my best pal Rob Andrews I now have a Matt Smith-autographed copy of my Doctor Who drawing!
Here it is!

Just some old random pics from my 'sketchbook'. Which is just taped in post-it notes now.
The guy with the beer is my supervisor. He's got a band called "Gold Stars are for Suckers". You can buy their album on iTunes.
Go buy it.
Rachel's show is one of my favourite podcasts.

Lots of Sherlock. I tried all kinds of ways to come up with a good shorthand for Cumberpatch's mouth shape, but in the end decided a simple line worked best.
Ah! The artist at work. Work, work, work. Even at home! Still, it's the best job in the world. I even have a 'storyboard director' credit with my studio. That sounds fancy.
As soon as I can get in to hook up my macbook to the scanner, I will post some more doodles.

Wow, I never update this thing!

I am a very boring person. I just work (draw) and watch telly. And go to the gym. I occasionally go on vacation (August!!). I don't even use my sketchbook anymore. Just doodle at work on post-it notes.
Just watched the new Sherlock BBC series. Can't wait for new episodes! Benedict Cumberpatch is my new favourite person. I love his Holmes. I can perfectly picture him creepily staring at John while he's sleeping.

:D

Guess what?

...

I'm writing a book. With pages!

And there will be pictures on the pages. And words. And maybe the pages will be really aerodynamic or something. I haven't really decided what all of the hi-tech features are going to be yet. It's tough to choose.

Anyway, I've been wanting to tell you guys about this for a very, very long time, and now I finally can!

Touchstone (a division of Simon & Schuster) will tentatively release my book in Fall 2012, which sounds like it's a long time away, but really, it's only the gestation period of two slightly premature babies. And if you're a time-traveler, then it can be as soon as you want it to be. It can be now!

If you're not a time traveler, here are some helpful time-frame comparisons to make the book's publication date seem not as far away:

So really, it isn't actually that far away.  And I'll keep updating here in the meantime.

The book will contain roughly 50% new material.  The other 50% will be posts I've published on this site already, but some of the posts that did not previously contain illustrations will be illustrated.  It will be basically just like my blog in book-form (illustrated short stories, guides, etc.), but it will have at least an attempt at an organizational structure, probably.

There isn't really an appropriately climactic way to end this announcement, so here's a picture of some shapes:

mmm the smell of fresh books

This was a book I illustrated this year with Usborne , I am very happy with how it turned out. It also stirs up some grumpy emotions as well; due to a scheduling error at my old job I ended up having to do two story boards simultaneously while doing this (sigh) , but that's done now thank goodness!

For those of you in the Toronto area my friend and colleague Sam Bradley, with a group of super talented artists, have put together yet another amazing collection of stories in the Anthology Project available at TCAF. I'm totally getting my copy signed....AGAIN!
that's it for now
