merry holidays

i though this was purdy

update

alrighty, basically this is a sculpture of a character design a friend gave me. Her name is alena, check her work out- I have it linked, she's one of the most gifted people I know. (alena the amazing) If alena is looking at this, its okay, I know I'm missing the girl. it'll be there in the next few days. the stupid armature that I had built was tooo bulky for what the design called for.
also a note, this isn't done, but this is basically me keeping a diary of sorts of how I make them... I didn't have the camera when I started on it. so no... armature pics. I'm also trying out a tip someone told me about... mixing a pack of black sculpey with normal flesh colour super sculpey. I'm not sure how its helping... yet... Also, I introduced myself to this lovely tool- soldiering tool. (sawd-er-ing). it makes the armature alot faster, as well as adding that tid bit of danger to it because you can really burn the dickens outa your skin with molten metal... hehehehehe ahhhh it'll heal.

stuffies

yeah, I'm done school for a few months, so expect this to be updated a little more often. But don't hold your breath. Anyways, its just ball point pen, and ADHD well watching tv. I love Wetta, and I just finished watching Chronicles of Narnia, and I love Clair Wendling like everybody else.
Either way, it was nice drawing something unrelated to school.
cheerio.

The following are two paintings. The one with the carrot is a friend's layout I painted, its for the film "Rabbits in the Sky" based off my concept. The thumbnails are compleatly my design. I just haven't worked up the the mojo to do them yet. Any beans, take it easy, and please feel free to offer suggestions.

Peck the Bird 1

I've got a lotta projects on the go, I know, but anyway, here is my original short film character in a new comic. I sold him to Film Roman almost 5 years ago now, but in January, the rights will revert back to me. So to celebrate, here's part one of a new story.

Un Chien Andalou partie une

Today I finally, for the first time, got to watch Salvador Dali and Louis Buñuel's Un Chien Andalou. It's one of the weirdest, most surreal damn things I've ever seen in my life. Needless to say I loved it. So... who knows if I'll finish it, but here now is part one of the comic adaptation of Un Chien Andalou. Feedback would be great, and I hope you enjoy.

Sassafrasquatch Preview

I have some very special plans for the format that Space Jet #2 will take. Just to drop some details, it will have 3 short stories only in it. One will be of the dreaded Sassafrasquatch. Here is a preview of my thumbnails from it.

Desktop

Hey! Now you can pretend to be me, by checking out my screen as of a minute ago. I'm working on the cover to Space Jet #2 right now, (the globe is part of the design) and watching NewsRadio.

Bite My Shiny Metal Ass!

I was Bender from Futurama for Halloween this year. I made the costume myself out of cardboard boxes, a hanger, duct tape, silver spray paint and lightbulbs. Unfortunately the eyes were heavy and had a tendency to slip down. Nevertheless, here, in all it's glory (or lack thereof) is my award-winning costume.

Tonight I went and saw Seth speak at Sophia's Books about his new graphic novel Wimbledon Green. Even though it's not out yet I scored a copy and got it signed.

Zombie Beach part 6

Yesterday was Halloween. Perfect time to make dinner with my girlfriend and watch Return of the Living Dead and Night of the Living Dead. Also making today a good day to continue Zombie Beach. I spent more time on the art this time. Not much more... but marginally more.

Daniel Clowes on NPR

Inspired by the interview I posted a link to below, I looked up more similar interviews, and stumbled on a fairly recent interview with Daniel Clowes on NPR. Here it is.

Chris Ware and Charles Burns Radio Interview

Man, if you like comics at *all*, go HERE now and listen to Chris (ACME Novelty Library) Ware and Charles (Black Hole) Burns pontificate for an hour about comics on Open Source Radio. It's fascinating.

Zombie Beach part 5

FINALLY. A month later I finally finished part five of Zombie Beach. Been very busy, what with the end of school, looking for a job, tomorrow's Industry Night, and Halloween preperations. Anyway, hopefully I keep more on top of it here on out. Without further ado, Zombie Beach.

Pigboy

Here's a crappy rushed strip to fill in the void of nothing that's been so prevalent lately.

They love me, they really LOVE me!

Weird and nice to get mentioned randomly. Over at the I'm just saying... blog they had a comics list in which they name ME. Woo! Here's the link to that.
They say:
Space Jet Comics, by Mike Myhre. A sketchblog that features good and interesting comics. Not too much to say other than it has a good sketchy style.

Thanks to Rob for pointing this out to me.

Card for Aunt Connie

I can't believe how long it's been since I've posted, I've really been slipping up.

I'll get back into Zombie Beach once I'm done writing my story for Gabriel Frizzera to draw in a project we're working on. Deadline's tomorrow. Damn. I'm working on a short story featuring my short film character Peck the Bird though at the moment. An impossibly lonely, socially awkward little shut-in who drinks insurmountable amounts of coffee and suffers from sometimes crippling bouts of paranoia.

Basically it's banal and he does nothing. Anyway, that's almost done being pencilled. I sold the rights to Peck backin in January of 2001 to Film Roman Inc, and next year, unless they renew the contract (why would they?) the rights revert back to me! But either way I'm contractually allowed to use the character for self-promotion so long as I don't make a profit off of it. Which will change next year.

While you're waiting for it, here's a card I drew for my Aunt Connie, who lives in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Life Drawing

Tonight, or since it's 4:30am I guess last night, I had Thanksgiving dinner with my girlfriend and her family. I've known her mom and dad almost as long as I've known her, but I still was nervous about making a good impression. Anyway, I think I did all right, dinner was delicious, I love turkey, and I love LeeAnn. It's late/early and I'm feeling goopily romantic, so there, I said it. I love my girlfriend.

I've been really shirking my drawing stuff lately, what with the looking for a job and whatnot. But here is some life drawing I did last December. I was pretty happy with it. Click the image for a larger view.

Willy

Someone calling themselves Willy "Old Fuck" Fuckstein posted a comment on the previous comic strip in the comments box. I found it so funny, that I had to draw it. Now, I don't know who this person is, so I credited the persona, and will link to the site linked to his handle. A Warning though, his site is definately not to my tastes in *any* way (no offense, Willy) but since I'm using his words, I'll give 'im the link. Thanks, man. Bravo. (Link Not Safe for Work)

Also, Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canucks.

The New Adventures of Robot Monster! page 3

Gabriel and I got together and drew for almost 4 hours today, and managed to do a bit more of Robot Monster. Here is page 3. I did panels 1, 3, 5 and Gabriel did panels 2, 4, and 6.

Salty Seaman Confessions Encore

Cause I'm busy with stuff here's another confession from Captain Augustus Assrash.
Also, Happy birthday to Jon Heard.

More Salty Seaman Confessions

I've been busy lately getting my portfolio up to snuff to send to studios around town. I needs me a job sumpin fierce. If potential employers are reading this... HIRE ME! You can e-mail me at nippletranquility (at) gmail.com. anyway, since I've been preoccupied, here is another lazy comic featuring ol' Captain Assrash.

Salty Seaman Confessions

Time now for a true confession straight from the mouth of that salty seaman (hee hee): Captain Augustus B. Assrash.

Zombie Beach part 4

Sorry for the long delay. I'll try n' keep up better from now on. Also Filthy London Whores has sold out at Rx, I'll be bringing more in later though. And I've been really enjoying drawing Allistair and Nicholas from it, so in the future there may be stories of filthy London whores. Till then enjoy Zombie Beach once again.

Momdom Calling

Quick autobio from the other morning. I find it ironic that my parents' generation fought so hard in the 60s for respect despite their choice to grow long hair. My hair isn't even that long, and I'd just as soon shoot myself as put it in a ponytail (I don't even have the length for it). Yet 40 years down the road these one-time children of the 60s became "The Man". Tsk tsk.

The New Adventures of Robot Monster! page 2

Now, unfortunately, this is actually the last page, at least for now, cause it's as far as Gabriel and I got on this comic. Hopefully we'll get a chance to wrap it up soon. Gabriel actually did the brunt of the art on this page. He did panels 1, 3 and 5. On the last page he did panels 2, 4 and 6.

The New Adventures of Robot Monster! page 1

Okay, ok, I know, I am REALLY late with Zombie Beach. I keep getting side-tracked. The new installment is still sitting half done.
I managed to get a table last minute at Sunday's comic con, and was selling my new comic Filthy London Whores and Space Jet #1. Filthy London Whores actually outsold Space Jet, despite only being 12 pages. Both of my comics are available now at Rx Comics on Main & 8th.
Here is page 1 of a jam comic I started with Gabriel Frizzera at the con.

If any of you don't know who Robot Monster is, then allow me to elaborate. Here is the movie poster. Here is a screen-shot. And here is the Internet Movie Database's section on it.

Filthy London Whores NEW 12-Page Comic

I pulled 2 all-nighters and in that time completed 11 pages of original material, the only previously seen comic page is the original, and the rest of the story follows that immediately. They're not gag strips, it's a story. The cover is also my very first attempt at painting in Photoshop.

It will be printed tomorrow, and distributed shortly thereafter. I didn't manage to get a table at this weekend's comic con, so it will not be available there.

Again, this will be available only in print, and none will be posted on Space Jet. Here's the cover:

New Comic Book

I realize I'm behind in posting Zombie Beach. I may or may not be able to get a table at THIS Sunday's (Sept 18th) Comic con at Heritage Hall on Main & 15th. But I wanted new material regardless, even though I just debuted Space Jet #1 on August 28th.

So last night, or just now rather, I stayed up all night writing, and pencilling my new 12 page comic of Filthy London Whores. (Although the part two I posted last week will not be in it, the only strip repeated is the original, and the story takes place immediately following the last panel.)

Hope you pick one up, and more importantly, hope I get a table.

Filthy London Whores part 2

Who knew I'd ever make a sequel? Not even I. Too bad this one sucks in comparison. I'm like Disney studios with the cheap-ass sequel on this one.
Hope someone likes it.

Zombie Beach part 3

Blogger is being a piece of shit.
If anyone wants to hire me to do art of some kind, my price would be reasonable. Don't be afraid. I'm so sick of school I want a job instead.
Lemme know, drop me a line at nippletranquility(at)gmail.com

As for the comic, when am I gonna get to the zombies? I'm not telling.

Zombie Beach part 2

Due to the layout nature of Zombie Beach, as opposed to Pinky Blues, updates will most likely be every couple days or so rather than every day.

Thursday, September 1, 2005

Zombie Beach part 1

In the wake of finishing Pinky Blues I was hard pressed to think of what to draw now. So I pulled out this chestnut I've been planning to work on for forever, and maybe in this context it'll force me to do it. Here's part one of ZOMBIE BEACH.

Space Jet #1 On Sale @ Vancouver Comic Con - August 28th

Be on the look-out for THIS book. (the one below) It is the print edition of Space Jet, including new and old content, terrific pin-ups from Gabriel Frizzera and Rob Jones, and a jam comic by myself and Robin Bougie. Pick it up this Sunday, Aug 28th at the Comix & Stories Vancouver Comic Con at Heritage Hall on Main & 15th. Other guests include Gabriel Frizzera, Steve Rolston, Robin Bougie, Ed Brisson, Marc Bell and Shannon Wheeler - the creator of Too Much Coffee Man! His was the first indie comic I ever read.

Pinky Blues part 36

THE FINAL Pinky Blues is here. Part thirty-six represents the end of this tale, I hope you've enjoyed it. I hope it's wrapped all the loose ends. I'd love feedback about what you thought of the story.

Anyway, the story is presented in it's entirety in the Space Jet print edition on sale this Sunday at the Vancouver Comic Con at Heritage Hall on Main & 15th. It reads much better as a whole story than in vignettes, I think.

Monday, August 22, 2005

Pinky Blues part 35

The strip after this is the STARTLING conclusion!! Loose ends will be wrapped and all that kinda stuff. Please come out and buy the print edition of Space Jet Comics on August 28th between 11 & 5 at the Vancouver Comic Con, located at Heritage Hall on Main & 15th. If you miss it, copies will be available for purchase at Rx Comics on Main & Broadway.

Pinky Blues part 34

2 parts left!
I saw a movie called Me and You and Everyone We Know tonight, and it was really really good. Super quirky. Loved it, seek it out. Here's the trailer.
I also saw The Aristocrats recently. Check it out, hilarious. Here's that trailer.

Pinky Blues part 32

FOUR parts left!

Pinky Blues part 31

So... sick... of school. Here's part thirty-one. It's winding down. Will all be posted by the end of next week. Hope you've been enjoying Pinky Blues, and stay tuned for the concluding chapters!

Pinky Blues part 30

YEAH! Part thirty! K, this is the BIG wedding one so it's dedicated to Carl and Brenda, who, after something like 10 years, are exchanging vows this here Saturday.
They were kind enough to invite my girlfriend and I, so I'm kind enough to dedicate this to them. If you're in the neighbourhood, you'll be able to spot LeeAnn and I in the crowd by looking for the sexiest bitches around. That'll be us.

Congratulations Carl & Brenda!

Also, check out this site for a cartoon called 8 Guys in the Head, being made by some of my friends, including the aforementioned Carl Upsdell, Ryan Morris, and pretty much the entire Affolter clan.

Pinky Blues part 29

Wow... next episode is part THIRTY. That's just crazy. This week is killing me but this weekend is gonna be good.

Sure helps to watch one of my favorite comedians, Conan O'Brien, on Larry King Live while I work though. It's great. (Guest-hosted by Bob Costas, who is always awesome) I liked it so much that I gotta share, so here's a link to the torrent. You should check it out.
